On the 23rd of every month, the Coalition for Effective Public Safety seeks to raise awareness of the 23+ hours per day an individual can spend in solitary confinement. These efforts to raise public awareness about solitary confinement arose directly from people incarcerated in solitary confinement in California. Beginning in March of 2015, the Prisoner Hunger Strike Solidarity Coalition began taking action. We were pleased to join them here in Massachusetts in June of 2015 to bring awareness to solitary confinement with the end goal of ultimately ending the inhumane practice.
This month, we are showing a new documentary created by Prisoners’ Legal Services on the use of solitary confinement in Massachusetts. Please join us for the showing and stay for a discussion with survivors of solitary, reform advocates, as well as the filmmaker.
After the screening of “Solitary Voices,” we will hear from a panel of experts on solitary confinement as well as the filmmaker. There will be time for Q & A and to learn what life is directly like in solitary confinement and grassroots efforts to change solitary confinement in Massachusetts.
