| CHHIRJ, ACLU of Massachusetts and Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law of Boston Bar Association Offer Recommendations Related to Equal Educational Opportunity & Boston Public Schools’ Student Assignment Plan |

| In September of 2009, the U.S. Department of Education awarded the Boston Public Schools a grant to engage parents, students, educators and other constituents in community dialogues to “create a student assignment plan which ensures equitable access to high quality educational services for all students in the City, within racially and ethnically diverse schools and classrooms.” Over the past year, CHHIRJ, the ACLU of Massachusetts and the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law of the Boston Bar Association have donated time and energy to assist Boston Public School educators in this process. On March 27, 2010, our three organizations co-sponsored and co-hosted the Golden Opportunity Summit at City Year’s Boston offices. The Summit brought experts from Boston and across the nation to inform public school administrators and the larger community about the challenges, opportunities, historical and economic contexts and technical matters associated with the development of a new student assignment plan. Following the Summit, our organizations drafted these Recommendations related to equal educational opportunity and the development of a student assignment plan in Boston. |
