I Told Paul Ryan What It’s Like to Live in Poverty. Here’s What Happened Next.

Tianna Gaines-Turner testified two years ago in a hearing that Paul Ryan hosted as part of the War on Poverty, the only one of the 17 people who testified actually living in poverty. Now, as the Speaker of the House reveals his new poverty tax’s force proposal, Gaines-Turner writes an open letter to him arguing that he hasn’t really listened to people in poverty, and urging him to “meet with us.”

“It’s clear as we look at how many people are struggling on low wages, forced to make impossible choices between basic necessities, that we still have plenty of work to do. It’s also clear that you could still learn a lot from me and many others who are experiencing poverty,” Gaines-Turner says.
