The White House’s Pick-Up Artists

In early June, President Obama commuted the sentences of 42 nonviolent drug offenders in federal prison. This is an important gesture, reflective of Obama’s recognition of the injustices in the criminal justice system. However, it brings new challenges for the released prisoners, who often have difficulties adjusting to their new found freedom.
