The Future of Policing Is Being Hashed Out in Secret

In this article Noah Feldman reveals the use of predictive algorithms by the New Orleans Police Department. While he allows that “Maybe prediction algorithms will be a great stride for justice,” he insists that determination cannot be made in secret and should really be tested before application in policing. As he writes:

We don’t yet know enough about the process and outcomes of AI policing to know whether the New Orleans experiment is a step toward justice or toward an overreaching police state, but we do know the experiment was conducted with too much secrecy and too little accountability. The next steps need more scrutiny, more discussion and more transparency.
