This article gives an overview of the proliferation of dollar stores in certain neighborhoods and the effects on the availability of fresh food. In addition to data and maps on these ventures across the country, the article chronicles a successful effort in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to regulate these stores.
…communities are not at the mercy of the dollar chains and their plans to blanket both rural and urban America with thousands of new stores. By blocking the spread of dollar stores and fostering the growth of local grocers, cities and towns can begin to close the gap in access to fresh food while also building local power and opportunity.
